Suspect Arrested for Stabbing a Man Walking His Dog

San Rafael, CA – On 07/08/2023, SRPD Officers arrested Alexander Amaya-Rodriguez, a 42-year-old San Rafael resident, for stabbing a man walking his dog at a Canal Neighborhood apartment complex on 07/07/2023.  The victim was treated at a local hospital and is expected to recover.  Amaya-Rodriguez was booked into the Marin County Jail on felony charges.

On 07/07/2023, at 8:40 PM, SRPD received a 9-1-1 call about a victim who had been stabbed at an apartment complex in the 3400 block of Kerner Boulevard.  SRPD Officers and SRFD Paramedics arrived within minutes and located a male victim that had been stabbed three times.  The victim told officers that a male suspect had approached him while he was taking his dog for a walk and suddenly started stabbing him.  The victim did not know who the suspect was.  The victim was rushed to a local hospital.

During the investigation, officers interviewed witnesses to the crime.  A witness, who had a past encounter with the suspect, provided cellphone video of the suspect.  An officer recognized the suspect in the video as Amaya-Rodriguez.  Officers canvassed the area for Amaya-Rodriguez and were unable to locate him that night.

The following morning, on 07/08/2023, at 7:12 AM, SRPD received a call that Amaya-Rodriguez was back at the apartment complex in the 3400 block of Kerner Boulevard and was knocking on doors.  Within minutes, SRPD officers were on the scene and looking for Amaya-Rodriguez.   Shortly after arriving on the scene, an officer located Amaya-Rodriguez, and he was taken into custody without incident.  When he was arrested, officers found him possessing the knife used to stab the victim.

Amaya-Rodriguez was interviewed by officers and admitted to the stabbing.  He had no relation to the victim, nor did he appear to know the victim.  Based on the investigation, it appeared this was an isolated incident.

Amaya-Rodriguez was booked into the Marin County Jail for attempted murder and felony assault with a deadly weapon.  His bail was set at $500,000.  The victim, in this case, is expected to recover.
