Fireworks in San Rafael
[Leer en español]
All fireworks are illegal in San Rafael and throughout Marin County — all year long.
There are no exceptions.

Why Fireworks Are Banned
Fireworks pose a serious threat to our community. Each year in California, fireworks cause:
- Injuries to adults and children
- Destructive fires that endanger lives and property
- Significant risk to open space, wildlife, and natural resources
In San Rafael, the risk of wildfires is especially high due to our dry climate and proximity to wildland areas. Even a small firework can spark a major disaster.
Enforcement and Penalties
San Rafael Police officers strictly enforce California’s fireworks laws and local ordinances to help reduce fire risk, protect public safety, and preserve natural resources.
- Violators can be arrested and prosecuted.
- Adults can be held responsible for children who ignite fireworks.
- You may be held civilly liable for injuries, property damage, or firefighting costs caused by fireworks.
Fines and penalties may include criminal charges, civil liability, and restitution for emergency response expenses.
Reporting Fireworks
We rely on the community to help keep San Rafael safe.
- To report the use of fireworks in progress, call the San Rafael Police Department at (415) 485-3000.
- To report information about someone selling or possessing fireworks, submit an anonymous tip at srpd.org/tips.
Please do not call 9-1-1 unless there is an immediate threat to life or property.
Keep Celebrations Safe
We understand that fireworks are often associated with holidays and celebrations. We encourage residents to enjoy professional, permitted fireworks displays when available, and to seek out safe, family-friendly alternatives like glow sticks, music events, or light shows.
By choosing safety over fireworks, you’re helping protect your family, your neighbors, and our first responders.
How Our Community Can Help
We’re asking for your help to spread the message: Fireworks are illegal and dangerous.
The San Rafael Police Department has free yard signs, window signs, and printed flyers available for residents and businesses. These materials are a simple way to raise awareness and show community support for a safe and fire-free summer.
To request a sign or flyer, please fill out this form. You can also download a PDF Flier here.
Your participation makes a difference. Together, we can reduce the risk of fires, protect our neighborhoods, and ensure a safe environment for everyone.
