Suspect Arrested for Attempted Homicide

San Rafael, CA – Today at approximately 7:00 a.m., the Marin Regional Crisis Response Unit assisted the San Rafael Police Department with the arrest of Diego Alejandro Diaz Flores, an 18-year-old San Rafael resident, at a residence in downtown San Rafael.

Today's arrest is the culmination of an incident that occurred on June 26th.  On June 26, 2026, at approximately 1:26 p.m., San Rafael police officers responded to the area of 40 Louise Street after receiving a report that someone had been shot and that a fight was still ongoing. Officers arrived on scene and located a 28-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds to his torso. San Rafael Fire Department personnel provided medical aid and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The motive for the fight and shooting remains under investigation. At this time, detectives are continuing to examine all possible factors, including whether gang affiliation played a role in the incident.

During the investigation, detectives obtained surveillance video from the area that captured the argument and subsequent shooting. The firearm used in the shooting was described as a distinct, multi-colored handgun. The video also provided detectives with additional leads regarding the individuals involved.

The following day, officers conducted a traffic stop involving a male juvenile in the 800 block of Third Street. During the stop, officers observed a distinct, multi-colored handgun in plain view on the rear passenger floorboard of the vehicle. The juvenile, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was arrested and booked into Marin County Juvenile Hall for possession of the handgun. Further investigation determined that the juvenile was in the area at the time of the shooting and was associated with the suspected shooter.

Through surveillance video and community cooperation SRPD Investigations Unit was able to confirm that the shooter was Diego Alejandro Diaz Flores. Following Diaz Flores’ arrest today, additional evidence was located at the residence that further corroborated his involvement in the shooting.

Diaz Flores was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of attempted homicide, in violation of Penal Code section 664/187 PC.

This investigation is a strong example of the community and law enforcement working together. Community members shared information, provided access to technology, and cooperated with investigators. Without the trust and relationships the San Rafael Police Department has built with the community, this case may not have been solved as quickly. Through the vigilant efforts of both the community and law enforcement, San Rafael is a safer place today.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information related to this incident is encouraged to contact the San Rafael Police Department.
