San Rafael, CA – SRPD Officers successfully apprehended two juvenile shooting suspects with the aid of the department’s Drone as First Responder (DFR).  Both juveniles were booked into Marin Juvenile Hall on several felony charges related to the discharge and possession of a firearm.  The victim in this case was uninjured.

On 07/28/2026, at 7:49 PM, SRPD began receiving emergency calls about a shooting that had taken place in the 500 block of Irwin Street.  SRPD Dispatchers were told that there were two suspects and were provided with their respective descriptions.  Within minutes of the call, SRPD’s Drone as First Responder (DFR) arrived on the scene and began looking for two suspects.

While the DFR was overhead, it spotted both suspects running from Duffy Place, behind a building, and then onto Andersen Drive.  The DFR operator coordinated officers to the suspects’ location, and both were taken into custody without incident.  While being taken into custody, the suspects were identified as juveniles.  Officers also located the handgun that was used in the shooting.

The victim was contacted and interviewed and, fortunately, was found physically unharmed as a result of the incident.  It was learned that the victim was in their vehicle on Irwin Street and was driving by the suspects when they suddenly opened fire.

This case is still under investigation, and at this time, it is unclear why the suspects began shooting at the victim.  Because the suspects are juveniles, their identifying information is not being released. 

SRPD’s DFR program has been in operation since October of 2025 and has successfully assisted in numerous emergency calls, reducing response times, providing real-time information for first responders, locating and assisting with the apprehension of dangerous suspects, and keeping both the public and first responders safe from hazardous situations.
