34 Citations Issued During Bicycle, Pedestrian Safety Operation
San Rafael, CA – The San Rafael Police Department issued 34 citations for a variety of violations made by drivers during a bicycle and pedestrian safety operation on Friday, January 9th, 2026.
34 drivers were issued citations for violations, which included failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, unsafe speed in and around crosswalks, and using a handheld cellular device while driving.
The operation took place at Mission Street and Nye Street, Fifth Avenue at Lootens Place, and Fourth Street at Shaver Street from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. During that time, 34 motorists were stopped.
“Safety is a shared responsibility, with drivers holding the greatest responsibility to keep other road users safe,” Sergeant Michael Mathis said. “We hope this operation serves as a reminder to everyone to practice due care and to look out for one another. The San Rafael Police Department and the traffic unit will continue to educate our community about safe driving and enforce dangerous driving behavior. Please be aware and mindful of pedestrians and bicyclists.”
The San Rafael Police Department, as part of its ongoing traffic enforcement efforts, will hold another bicycle and pedestrian safety operation in 2026, with a date to be determined.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
