Man Arrested after Threatening Several People with a Box Cutter

San Rafael, CA – On Sunday, December 14, 2025, SRPD Officers arrested Eduardo Garcia Hernandez, a 20-year-old San Rafael resident, after he attempted to stab at least four victims and vandalized a vehicle while in the Home Depot parking lot at 111 Shoreline Parkway.  Hernandez was booked into the Marin County Jail on several charges that included felony assault with a deadly weapon and felony vandalism.

At 10:45 AM, SRPD began receiving several emergency 9-1-1 calls about Hernandez threatening and chasing several people with a box cutter knife while in the Home Depot parking lot.  Officers immediately responded and arrived within minutes.

Officers located Hernandez outside and near the store entrance.  Officers tried to stop and detain Hernandez, but he was not cooperative with their commands.   After several minutes of giving additional directions and de-escalation, Hernandez cooperated, and officers were able to take him into custody.  At that time, Hernandez spat on several officers.  Officers also located a box cutter in his possession.

During the investigation, it was learned that Hernandez had threatened and chased at least four victims with a box cutter knife.  During Hernandez's attack, he went after two victims; one victim ran from Hernandez, and Hernandez chased after him.  The other victim got into his car and assisted the victim being chased by Hernandez. The other victim was able to get into the vehicle, and Hernandez then vandalized the car's hood with a box cutter.

It was also learned that a Home Depot employee stood up to Hernandez and prevented him from being able to walk into the store just before police officers arrived on the scene.  The employee's actions likely saved other people from being attacked by Hernandez.

Fortunately, none of the victims were stabbed or injured with the box cutter knife.  It appeared that Hernandez did not know any of the victims, and he did not state what motivated him to go after the victims.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000. Tips can also be made online at http://www.srpd.org/tips.
