UPDATE FOR SUNDAY, AUGUST 24, 2025 - 516 Canal Street Fire Incident, Second Deceased Victim Found During Ongoing Recovery and Investigation Effort
San Rafael, CA - This evening, August 24, 2025, members of Marin’s Rescue Task Force-1, Marin County’s Fire Investigation Team, San Rafael Firefighters, and San Rafael Police Investigators continued to work on recovery and investigation efforts.
Late this evening, while working through the severely damaged apartment complex, a second deceased victim was located. The deceased appears to be an adult. Due to the state of the remains found, no immediate identification can be made.
This brings the death toll of this fire incident to two persons.
The Marin County Coroner’s Office will be responsible for working to identify the remains. That process will take time, and we ask for patience during that process. Please refer to the Marin County Coroner’s Office Statement regarding its effort to identify the first deceased victim: https://www.marinsheriff.org/community/news-press-releases/san-rafael-canal-structure-fire-one-victim-recovered-deceased
At this time, we are not able to confirm that the reported missing persons were those found deceased. We are actively continuing to work on the two missing persons cases. No additional persons have been reported missing.
On behalf of the City of San Rafael and the first responders at the scene of the incident, we express our condolences to the families, friends, and neighbors affected by this tragedy.
The scene will remain active as we work on two primary objectives. The first is to continue recovery operations, which include searching for any unaccounted-for persons, if they exist. The second is to investigate the origin and the cause.
We ask for the public’s assistance in obtaining witness information, photos, and videos of the fire incident. We are asking anyone with information to call the San Rafael Police Department at 415-485-3000.
We are specifically asking for video and photos that were taken between 5:00 and 5:30 in the morning on Thursday, August 21, 2025.
Our ATF partners have provided ways for the public to provide information:
ATF Tip Line: 1-888-ATF-FIRE (1-888-283-3473)
Individuals with photos and videos of the incident can use the “Report it.com” app or via the web at www.reportit.com.
We are thankful for our community’s support, as we know this has deeply impacted the displaced residents of the apartment complex and the surrounding neighborhood. We ask the public to be respectful of surrounding residents and avoid the area of Canal Street between Hoag Street and Harbor Street.
