Suspect on Parole Arrested for Downtown San Rafael Shooting
San Rafael, CA – On Thursday, 06/29/2023, a 31-year-old San Rafael resident Marco Antonio Gramajo, was arrested by SRPD Detectives after determining he was responsible for a daytime shooting in Downtown San Rafael. Gramajo was booked into the Marin County Jail on numerous felony and misdemeanor charges.
On Saturday, 06/24/2023, just after 3:00 PM, the San Rafael Police Department received 9-1-1 calls about people in a physical fight in the area of Fourth Street and D Street in Downtown San Rafael. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate a fight. The caller may not have known the accurate location of the incident.
A couple of minutes later, an officer driving in the 800 block of Fourth Street was waived down by a community member who had witnessed the physical fight. The officer was told that the suspect involved in the fight had a gun and fired it at a victim who was no longer at the scene. The officer checked where the shooting was witnessed and located a spent ammunition casing and an intact bullet on the sidewalk. Even though witnesses believed a victim had been shot, officers did not locate a shooting victim or any blood evidence at the scene.
Another victim, who reported that the same suspect tried to rob him, approached officers at the scene and showed a cell phone photograph of the shooting suspect. The victim told the officer that Gramajo approached him, pointed a gun at him, and demanded his cell phone. Gramajo also threatened to kill the victim. The victim tried to flee from Gramajo. While Gramajo followed, he placed the gun in his pocket. Moments later, while Gramajo was still pursuing the victim, another man was approached by Gramajo. Gramajo got into another altercation with this second person. Gramajo pulled out a gun and fired a round at him. Gramajo and the potential shooting victim fled the scene before SRPD’s arrival. The attempted robbery victim was not physically hurt.
A detective familiar with Gramajo identified him from the cell phone photograph and knew him to be on California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) parole. SRPD contacted CDCR Parole to locate and apprehend Gramajo.
On the evening of Thursday, 06/29/2023, CDCR Parole Agents located Gramajo at his home in the 100 block of Andersen Drive and took him into custody after a brief struggle. A firearm with no serial number, also known as a “ghost” gun, was located at his residence.
Gramajo was booked at the Marin County Jail for being a felon in possession of a firearm, felony assault with a firearm, felony attempted robbery, felony criminal threats, felony willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, felony carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm in public, and misdemeanor resisting a peace officer.
At the time of this press release, the possible shooting victim has not yet identified or located. During this investigation, SRPD Detectives checked with surrounding hospitals, and none reported providing medical care for a shooting victim. SRPD Detectives are asking for the victim to contact them.
