Two Suspects Cited in Bike Theft Sting

San Rafael, CA – On May 19th, San Rafael Police Department Officers conducted a bicycle theft sting.  Approximately fifteen minutes after officers locked the bait bicycle on the 700 block of B Street, Dionysios Economopoulos, a 41-year-old San Rafael man, cut the lock and rode away.  Officers stopped Economopoulos in the area.   Economopoulos claimed the bicycle belonged to him, despite the observations of officers who watched him steal it.  Economopoulos was issued a felony citation for grand theft, possession of burglary tools, carrying a concealed dirk/dagger, and violation of probation.

Officers moved to the area of Francisco Blvd. East and Bellam Blvd.  After locking the bicycle with a new lock, Travis White, a 50-year-old Marin City resident, approached and cut the lock.  He peddled away on the stolen bicycle and was quickly stopped by officers.  White stated another person gave him the bicycle.  White was issued a felony citation for grand theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, and violation of probation.

Economopoulos and White were not booked at the Marin County Jail due to restrictions related to COVID-19.

The San Rafael Police Department has experienced an increase in bicycle theft in recent months.  Despite our best efforts, many bicycles are stolen in our community every year.  It is important to make a note of the brand and serial number of your bicycle, so it can be identified if it is lost or stolen.  You may also register your bicycle with the San Rafael Police Department at https://srpd.org/bikes. Completing the registration form helps us identify and return stolen bicycles to their rightful owners.
