AVOID the 13 Plans Labor Day Weekend Checkpoint

San Rafael, CA – August 29, 2012. The Summer/Labor Day National Anti-DUI crackdown has resulted in a significant number of DUI arrests from local routine traffic enforcement and special Avoid the 13 DUI deployments in Marin County.

From 12:01 AM Friday August 17, 2012 through Midnight Tuesday August 28, 2012 Marin County law enforcement officers have arrested 56 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  In 2011 38 DUI arrests occurred during the same twelve day time period

Many people arrested for DUI or who are driving on a suspended or revoked drivers license are under the impression that if they drive anyway, the consequences aren’t that tough, that the law doesn’t apply to them, or that they can drive without a license and won’t get caught.  As a part of our zero tolerance campaign, the Marin Avoid team is also cracking down on those scofflaws.  Last Tuesday, August 21st, officers from the Marin County Sheriff’s Office conducted a court sting at the Marin County Courts.  They focused on offenders who left court and drove away, disobeying their DMV Suspension Orders or a judge’s Court Order not to drive without a valid license.  The team made 15 traffic stops that resulted in 14 citations and one arrest.  These repeat offenders will face additional trips to court, fines, longer driver’s license suspensions, and possible jail time for failing to obey Court and DMV orders not to drive without a license.

Over the course of this Labor Day weekend and final days of the campaign a DUI/drivers license checkpoint will be held on Friday, August 31st in San Anselmo beginning at 6:00 p.m.  In addition, all regularly scheduled traffic and patrol officers throughout the county will continue to focus on getting impaired drivers off the road.

Police, Sheriff and the CHP encourage all motorists to help make your community safer: Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911.  Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

DUI arrest data collection will continue through Labor Day midnight Monday, September 3, 2012.
