San Rafael, CA – January 16, 2012. Three people are in custody after a Sunday morning assault involving a handgun at the San Rafael Travel Lodge.
On Sunday, January 16th about 7:50 a.m. SRPD received a report of a group of people arguing in a room at the Travel Lodge on East Francisco Boulevard. Officers arrived and quickly determined that an armed man, accompanied by a woman, had forced their way into one of the rooms and threatened the man inside with a handgun. A second man had jumped out of a second floor bathroom window in order to escape. The first man, Humberto Espinoza, said that the suspects kicked in the door and the male suspect held a gun to his head, demanding to know the whereabouts of his friend. The pair then fled in a silver BMW. Espinoza did not know the male, but identified the female assailant as his friend’s girlfriend, Shannon Nakooka. Within a few minutes of the initial call, Marin County Sheriff’s deputies located the two suspects and the car in the County Club Bowl parking lot on Vivian Way. Nakooka and Juan Ponce were taken into custody and a handgun was later recovered from the car.
Further investigation revealed that Espinoza had taken a teenage girl to the motel where the two men were staying the night. Nakooka, fearing that her boyfriend was cheating on her with the girl, enlisted the help of Ponce in order to find him. Nakooka’s boyfriend was contacted late yesterday. He was not injured and provided investigators with a statement. Two female runaways, age 15 and 16, were also located and released to their families. Nakooka’s three children, ages 5, 4, and 1 were placed in the care of Child Protective Services.
Nakooka, age 24, of San Rafael, was booked on charges of armed robbery, burglary, conspiracy, and violation of probation. Ponce, 30, a Richmond resident, was booked for assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, conspiracy and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun. Espinoza, 29, of Daly City, was booked for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and possession of a controlled substance. All three were taken to Marin County Jail and will be arraigned on January 18th at 9:00 a.m.
