San Rafael, CA – September 26, 2013. San Rafael Police are investigating two cases of suspected drug-facilitated sexual assault that occurred over the past 10 days.
On September 12th, a 26 year-old woman reported that she had been out drinking with friends in downtown San Rafael the previous evening. She left the Nickel Rose nightclub around 2:00 a.m. She woke up at home eight hours later, the victim of a sexual assault. She has no memory of anything between leaving the bar and waking up the next morning.
On September 21st, the second victim, age 22, was at the Nickel Rose with friends and has no clear memories of the evening after about 11:00 p.m. She woke up the next morning in a hotel in Southern Marin, also the victim of a sexual assault.
Based on the circumstances of the two cases, police are investigating the possibility that an unknown substance may have been added to a drink without their knowledge. The proprietors and staff of the Nickel Rose have offered their complete cooperation in the investigation. “Date rape” or predator drugs are administered surreptitiously and have sedative, hypnotic, and amnesiac effects. The term “date rape” can be misleading because the suspect using the drug is not necessarily a date, but may be a complete stranger. Predator drugs can be used on men and women, and in both public and private settings.
