Dog Days Return to the San Rafael Police

Police Department to Hold Swearing-In Ceremony for Two New K9’s

San Rafael, CA – August 13, 2013.  After an 11 year absence the San Rafael Police Department is pleased to welcome canines back into the ranks.  The Department will hold a swearing-in ceremony for two new K9 Units at the San Rafael City Council meeting on Monday, August 19th, 2013.The ceremony will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 1400 Fifth Avenue.  There will be short reception held immediately afterwards.

The San Rafael Police Department had a very successful canine program for over 20 years, but unfortunately it was eliminated in 2003 due to budget constraints.  In 2012, the revival of the K9 program began when police officers and citizens formed the San Rafael Police K9 Association.  The K9 Association received numerous generous private donations and contributions.

Some of the contributors include the Sean M. Walsh K-9 Memorial Foundation who donated the funding to purchase one of the dogs.  Sean Walsh was a Military Police Officer with the Army National Guard and was killed in action in Afghanistan on November 16th, 2011.  Sean was a Bay Area native and had aspirations of one day becoming a police officer and K9 handler.  A foundation was established in his honor by his family and friends to assist law enforcement agencies establish K9 teams.  This was the second such donation from the foundation.

Additional contributors were Kent Randall of The Moulding Company who donated funding for the purchase a second dog; The Griffith Family Trust which made two considerable donations; and many others too numerous to list here.

The two new canines graduated from K9 training school on August 1st, 2013 and are now actively patrolling San Rafael’s streets and neighborhoods with their human counterparts.  The dogs are male German Shepherds named Faro (pronounced Fair-O) and Ares (pronounced R-us).

The public is invited to attend the ceremony where Police Chief Diana Bishop will be presenting the dogs with their badges.  Additional specific information about the K9 Units and the Police K9 Association will be made available at the swearing-in ceremony.  If you are interested in obtaining more information about the San Rafael Police K9 Association or would like to make a donations please go their website at   Information about the Sean M.
