Avoid the Marin 13: Four DUI Arrests over the Saint Patrick's Weekend

San Rafael, CA – March 18, 2013.  Avoid the Marin 13 allied agencies conducted saturation patrols throughout the County over the St. Patrick’s weekend.  Starting Friday, units conducted directed enforcement activities focusing on impaired drivers.

Ninety nine drivers were stopped through Marin County resulting in eleven field sobriety tests being administered.  Four drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.  Two of the arrests were by the San Rafael Police, one by the Novato Police and one by Fairfax Police officers.

Officers throughout Marin County have received not only specific training in administering Standard Field Sobriety Tests, but some have been trained in Drug Abuse Recognition (DAR) and as Drug Recognition Experts (DRE).  This enhanced ability has led to better detection of impaired drivers.  Drivers that are under the influence of not only alcohol but legal and illegal drugs pose an immense danger to themselves and others when operating a vehicle.

Additionally one driver with a suspended license was arrested, and twelve unlicensed drivers were cited and released.  Seven moving safety violations were issued.

“Our message is simple and unwavering: if we find you driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions,” said Chief Bishop. “Even if you beat the odds and manage to walk away from an impaired-driving crash alive, the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired can still destroy your life.”

Although there was a focus on impaired driving enforcement during the Saint Patrick’s Weekend, all of the Avoid the Marin 13 agencies aggressively enforce DUI laws throughout the year.

The national Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown is led by NHTSA with the California Avoid DUI Task Force Campaign combining high-visibility enforcement and heightened public awareness through publicity. For more information, visit the High-Visibility Enforcement Campaign Headquarters at
