Winter Holiday Campaign on Impaired Driving Ends With FIVE Arrests By DUI Task Force

San Rafael, CA – January 2, 2013.  Avoid the Marin 13 allied agencies conducted a County wide Task Force consisting of 18 officers and a supervisor.  The units took to the streets at 6:00 PM and were still making traffic stops after 3:00 AM.

One hundred and two drivers were stopped through Marin County resulting in twenty one field sobriety tests being administered.  Five drivers were arrested for driving under the influence.  Three of the arrests were by the San Rafael Police and two were by Tiburon Police officers.

Officers throughout Marin County have received not only specific training in administering Standard Field Sobriety Tests, but some have been trained in Drug Abuse Recognition (DAR) and as Drug Recognition Experts (DRE).  This enhanced ability has led to better detection of impaired drivers.  Drivers that are under the influence of not only alcohol but legal and illegal drugs pose an immense danger to themselves and others when operating a vehicle.

Additionally three drivers with suspended licenses were arrested, and fourteen unlicensed drivers were cited and released.  Twenty four moving safety violations were issued.

“Our message is simple and unwavering: if we find you driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions,” said Chief Bishop. “Even if you beat the odds and manage to walk away from an impaired-driving crash alive, the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired can still destroy your life.”

Although there was a focus on impaired driving enforcement during the Winter Mobilization Period, all of the Avoid the Marin 13 agencies aggressively enforce DUI laws throughout the year.

The national Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown is led by NHTSA with the California Avoid DUI Task Force Campaign combining high-visibility enforcement and heightened public awareness through publicity. For more information, visit the High-Visibility Enforcement Campaign Headquarters at
