San Rafael, CA – November 5, 2012. Three women were arrested this evening in connection with the death of an infant at a San Rafael child care facility.
On October 23rd at 3:33 p.m. San Rafael Police received a 911 call reporting an infant not breathing at the Magic Place Children’s Center located at 1055 Las Ovejas Drive. San Rafael Fire Department paramedics responded immediately, treating and transporting the four-month-old baby boy to Kaiser Hospital. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division conducted a forensic examination and autopsy of the infant. SRPD detectives and the State of California Community Care Licensing Division have been conducting concurrent investigations into the circumstances of the infant’s death.
Late this afternoon, the Coroner determined that the baby’s cause of death was asphyxia due to suffocation, due to obstruction of the external airway by bedding. The manner of death was ruled accidental. Based on this finding, and the totality of the police investigation, there was probable cause to arrest the three caregivers for involuntary manslaughter. Claudia Gil, age 44; Sandra Del Socoro Alvarado Mendez, age 49; and Lorena Huitron Jiminez, age 28 were taken into custody at the center after it closed for the evening. All three women are Richmond residents and Gil is the owner of the business. They were booked at Marin County Jail and bail is set at $75,000.
