San Rafael, CA – September 19, 2012. A Clovis man was taken into custody late last night after running from the police and falling off a roof.
On Tuesday afternoon the San Rafael Police Department received information from Fresno Police that a wanted felon was in the city. Michael Cole Kitley, a known burglar in the Fresno area, had numerous outstanding felony warrants and was possibly staying in a hotel in San Rafael. Officers traced Kitley to the Villa Inn on Lincoln Avenue and set up surveillance on the hotel.
Around 11:00 pm Kitley drove through the parking lot of the inn and then left, driving down Lincoln Avenue. Officers followed Kitley to the 100 block of Prospect Drive, where he suddenly stopped the car, got out, and ran through the backyards of several homes. Kitley got onto a roof of a nearby house, ran across it and fell off. He was taken into custody on the other side. Kitley sustained minor abrasions in the fall and received a medical check at Marin General’s emergency room.
Two loaded stolen firearms were found in Kitley’s vehicle and a third stolen handgun was located near the spot where Kitley first ran from the car. Investigators also found stolen passports, ID cards and social security cards along with other suspected stolen items. The ID and other items appear to belong to victims from other counties and investigators are working with Bay Area detectives to locate the victims and return their property.
Kitley, age 40, was booked at Marin County Jail on a variety of firearms related charges including felon in possession of a firearm and possession of stolen property. He was also booked on numerous outstanding warrants for ID theft, stolen vehicle, and a $295,000 warrant for burglary.
Anyone with information about Kitley is asked to contact the San Rafael Police Department at 415.485.3000.
