Case Number: SR12-1302
SAN RAFAEL, CA – On 02/21/12, at 8:48 P.M., San Rafael Police officers responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls of a single gun shot fired within an apartment complex in the unit block of Merrydale Road. Based on witness accounts, Officers quickly determined that two tenants of the complex were responsible and still in their apartment.
SRPD officers took safety measures and requested other tenants of the complex to voluntarily evacuate. Once the complex was evacuated, Officers called out to the occupying tenants where the gun shot had originated. Officers contacted and detained a male and female occupant.
It was determined that after interviewing the responsible occupants that the female had accidentally discharged a semi-automatic handgun. It was determined there were no criminal violations. The semi-automatic pistol and an additional gun were secured by the police for safekeeping.
After the almost two hour ordeal, tenants were allowed back into their apartments. No one was injured as the result of the accidental discharge and the case is being reviewed.
