Attempted Copper Theft Thwarted

San Rafael, CA – December 24, 2011.  Four Oakland men were arrested Friday night after their theft attempt was prevented by a PG&E employee.

On 12/23/2011 at 8:28 p.m. SRPD responded to the PG&E yard at 1220 Anderson Drive on a report of a suspicious vehicle inside the fenced off parking lot.  A PG&E employee reported that he saw a white van driving into the area where their copper wire is stored and that no one should be inside the fenced lot at that time of night.  PG&E has been the victim of several previous copper wire thefts, two of them earlier this year.

As officers were arriving, the white van exited a previously locked gate at a high rate of speed and sped down Anderson Drive towards Bellam Boulevard.  Officer Alex Holm turned around to give chase as other officers were arriving.  The suspect vehicle saw the oncoming SRPD vehicles responding and immediately pulled to the right curb and stopped.  No pursuit was initiated due to the short distance in which the van stopped.  A high risk stop was conducted and four suspects were taken into custody without incident.  Meanwhile, officers at the lot discovered that the padlock to the gate had been cut.  A search of the suspect vehicle produced bolt cutters and property belonging to PG&E.

Marshall Pease, age 42; Brent Gibson, 34; Christopher Bates, 44; and Donald Furino, 52 were all booked at Marin County Jail on charges of attempted grand theft, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, and conspiracy.  Pease, the driver and owner of the van, was also booked for driving on a suspended license.
