Case Number: SR17-01088
On Sunday February 5th, 2017 at approximately 6:15 P.M., San Rafael Police Department officers responded to the intersection of Kerner Boulevard and Larkspur Street on reports of a hit and run collision involving a pedestrian.
Arriving officers located a 34 year-old male with serious injuries in the roadway of Kerner Boulevard. The victim was immediately transported to Marin General Hospital with major injuries. His condition was later upgraded and he is expected to make a full recovery.
Witnesses interviewed at the scene described a large food truck as the vehicle that struck the pedestrian while he was in the crosswalk and fled the scene.
The San Rafael Police Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) took over the investigation. The day after the collision, the registered owner of the food truck came forward and met with MAIT investigators. Investigators subsequently identified the driver responsible for the hit and run collision.
On February 8th, investigators arrested the driver at his residence in Richmond. He attempted to avoid apprehension by crawling out of a bedroom window, but was taken into custody without further incident. During the interview, the suspect admitted being the driver and said he fled the scene because he was in fear of being arrested. The suspect arrested was identified as 44 year-old Gerardo Mata Reyes, a resident of Richmond. He was booked into the Marin County Jail for felony hit and run and driving without a valid driver’s license.
