San Rafael, CA – December 12, 2013. An elderly man was struck and killed this morning near the Marin County Civic Center.
At 9:43 a.m. officers responded to a report of a vehicle collision at the intersection of Civic Center and Peter Behr Drives, adjacent to the Thursday morning Marin County Farmer’s Market. Officers arrived to find a pedestrian down on the ground and Marin County Sheriff’s deputies providing first aid. San Rafael Fire Department paramedics arrived shortly and declared the pedestrian dead at the scene. He has been identified as Jurgen Traub, age 79, a resident of Nevada City, California. Mr. Traub was formerly a resident of Greenbrae and was back in the area visiting friends. It appears that he was crossing the street toward the Farmer’s Market when he was struck by a Dodge van driving south on Civic Center Drive. The driver, a 38 year old Napa resident, stopped immediately and is cooperating with the investigation.
SRPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded and is conducting the collision investigation. A quarter mile section of Civic Center Drive was shut down for several hours and reopened around 3:00 p.m.
The Farmer’s Market was very busy at the time of accident and investigators would like to speak with all available witnesses. If you witnessed the collision and have not yet spoken with an officer, please call SRPD at 415.485.3000.
