San Rafael, CA – September 20, 2012. A woman was seriously injured late this afternoon when a SUV jumped the curb, struck her, and then crashed through the front of a Fourth Street restaurant.
The collision occurred just after 5:00 p.m. at Lundy’s Home Cooking,1143 Fourth Street. The driver of a 1999 Chevy Blazer was attempting a turning maneuver and lost control of the vehicle. He drove on to the sidewalk, striking a pedestrian, and then pushing her through the glass front of the restaurant. The 78 year-old woman was pinned by the car for about 10 minutes while San Rafael Fire Department paramedics worked to free her. She was taken to Marin General Hospital with major injuries. The driver, a 55 year-old El Sobrante man, was alone in the car at the time of the collision and was not injured. He went to the police station for an interview and was later released. Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be a factor at this time.
Fourth Street from B Street to Lincoln Avenue was already closed for the weekly farmers’ market, but vendors are allowed to drive in to drop off materials and set up their booths. The driver has a vendor booth at the market. SRPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) was called to the scene and a portion of the 1100 block of Fourth Street will remain closed while they conduct their investigation.
